I Was a Communist for the FBI

Throughout most of the 1940's, Matt Cvetic worked as a volunteer undercover agent for the FBI, infiltrating the Communist Party in Pittsburgh. In 1949, his testimony helped to convict several top Party members of conspiracy to overthrow the U.S. government. Cvetic sold his account to "The Saturday Evening Post" and it was serialized under the title "I Posed as a Communist for the FBI". It later became a best-selling book. In 1951, Warner Brothers released a film based on these accounts entitled "I Was A Communist For The FBI", starring with Frank Lovejoy as Cvetic.


In 1952, in the midst of the Red scare of the 1950's, the Frederick W. Ziv Company produced the syndicated radio series with the same title as the movie. It was produced without assistance from the FBI, which refused to cooperate. I Was a Communist for the FBI consisted of 78 episodes syndicated by the Frederick W. Ziv Company to more than 600 stations, including KNX in Los Angeles, California, with original episodes running from April 23, 1952 to October 14, 1953. Each episode ended with Dana Andrew's well-remembered words, ""I was a Communist for the FBI. I walk alone".


The show had a budget of $12,000 a week, a very high cost to produce a radio show at the time.

Lives of Harry Lime, The



The Lives of Harry Lime (original British title The Adventures of Harry Lime) was an old-time radio program produced in London, England during the 1951 to 1952 season.

Orson Welles reprized his role of Harry Lime from the celebrated 1949 film adaptation of Graham Greene's novel The Third Man. The radio series is a "prequel" to the film, and depicts the many misadventures of con-artist Lime in a somewhat lighter tone than the character's villainy in the film.

Most episodes would begin with "The Third Man Theme" being played, abruptly cut off by an echoing gunshot. Then Welles would speak:

"That was the shot that killed Harry Lime. He died in a sewer beneath Vienna, as those of you know who saw the movie The Third Man. Yes, that was the end of Harry Lime ... but it was not the beginning. Harry Lime had many lives ... and I can recount all of them. How do I know? Very simple. Because my name is Harry Lime."

Although often cited as a BBC production, the series was one of a number produced and distributed independently by the prolific Harry Alan Towers. Only sixteen of the episodes were acquired and broadcast by the BBC in the UK. It was the first time that the BBC broadcast episodes of a dramatic series that it did not produce. The full series was syndicated to radio stations in the U.S.

Synopsis:              

This series was the replacement series for the long running Australian imported series “Nightbeat”.
The story centered around Lee Masters, the blind FBI detective that solved crime in is own unique
style. The series was one of many directed and produced by Gerrie van Wyk and was an original
idea developed between Gerrie and Brian O'Shaughnessy. Gerrie later succeeded with another
series entitled “Crisis Call”, and many Afrikaans serials for Springbok Radio, including the long
running series “Oupa Jasper” and "Die Vlugteling".

Research has shown that there were infact 2 seasons of this series. The first season only lasted 28
episodes and was broadcast between July 1967 and February 1968 on Friday evenings. A second
more successful season started in November 1969 and continued until September 1974 broadcast
on Tuesday evenings. The series had 3 writers, with Brian O'Shaughnessy writing the most episodes.
Brian also acted in many of the episodes. Tony Jay , who also wrote several episodes, played the
lead role, Lee Masters. He was replaced in 1973 by Louis Ife, another writer who played Lee, until the
end of the series in 1974. The music, including the opening theme music was composed specially for
the series by Colin Campbell.

Hosiprog




Hosiprog was founded by the late Dennis Rookard to create and provide drama and features for hospital radio, audio magazines for the blind and community radio stations.
Essex Audio Theatre and the Old Court Radio Theatre Company continue to produce and record original material for Hosiprog, with John Rhodes as recording engineer. We are also moving the Hosiprog archive to this site.
Anyone is welcome to listen to the recordings, or to download them, and they may be broadcast freely by voluntary and community-run radio stations.

Himan Brown's Mystery Theater (Revival)


This is the revival of the Peabody Award Winning Radio Drama, CBS Radio Mystery Theater, originally broadcast from 1974-1982, rebroadcast in 1998 and 2000.
The still-active Brown attempted a brief revival of the series, rebroadcasting selected old episodes with his own introductions replacing original host E. G. Marshall.
The original show was never syndicated, so most episodes out there were once taped from the radio which resulted in many with mediocre to poor sound quality.
The show's revival in 1998 and 2000 meant that Mystery Theater was on the air once again, but this time it could be recorded with better sound recording technology. This set high quality at 128-44 kbps.
